Day One - Arriving Venice

Day 1: S. Marco
It's said that to really appreciate Venice, she is best approached from the sea. By boat, either at dusk or at dawn. These are the perfect times to elicit a sublime appreciation of the mysterious city, as if in a vision, La Serenissima rising from the lagoon. So we came by express train from Milan, not at dawn nor dusk but at some time in between. I'm wrestling with one big duffle bag on wheels, a once-lovely vintage Italian aluminium travel case packed full of cameras, and a day pack. Vivienne too with two cases, one large one small, both on wheels, heavy with fabulous clothes, two hats on her head, and a handbag of course – we had come to make pictures in this city of dreams.
